Last Saturday we made a detour to a part of Sowntown Auckland we hardly venture to. When I was in primary school, I went with my dad to the Sibu Storage tanks of ESSO. The Sibu tanks were nothing compared to the Auckland ones. These are gigantic.

The Western Reclamation (also known as Wynyard Quarter, Wynyard Point, Wynyard Wharf or Tank Farm, though the latter three strictly speaking designate only parts of the whole), is a reclaimed piece of land on the Waitemata Harbour at the western edge of the Auckland waterfront in Auckland City, New Zealand.

It is located to the north of Freemans Bay and to the west of the Viaduct Basin. Much of the area is as of 2009 still covered by petrol and liquid chemical storage facilities of Ports of Auckland and various other companies, giving the area its 'Tank Farm' moniker

Currently, the area is still used by the bulk liquid industry, with 500,000 tonnes of liquids and cement being transported via Wynyard Wharf per year. This provides NZ$ 1.2 billion of yearly turnover, and 4000 jobs in the Auckland economy.

Very interesting, Ann. «Louis» et Mme. la Vache live near the Chevron refinery in Richmond, California and can see part of the refinery's tank farm from their balcony.

Does «Louis» get cheaper gas?

Only if he does what cows are infamous for: produce his own, which wouldn't be gasoline but methane...

These refineries and storage tanks always remind me that there is so much going on underground while we are sleeping, driving, working, etc.

As you show, they can be photogenic.

Good shots of these huge tanks! Gosh, I see another post below, has my sidebar been missing them? I'm popping down to check your earlier one out.

I just read your bungee jump post, wow that is still scary! I don't need these rides, because being old is a scary ride all by itself! I am quite able to get dizzy without paying for a ride to do it for me. I love taking pictures of glass buildings, too! You got some good building reflections in this one. You are very talented in flower arrangements, especially at the last minute!! I cannot do it at all.

Ann,

the red bus trail was done with a 2 sec shutter speed.

Oil Storage Tanks

It’s really amazing sight to see so many huge storage tanks! Well, I hope the administrator of the ‘Tank Farm’ does check and maintain these regularly. Leaks from petrol and liquid chemical storage tanks can be harmful not only to the people who work in the facility, but also to the surroundings. Anyway, have you gone to the site again?
