This is where chocolate comes from. Inside the cocoa pod are beans which are processed to make yummy chocolate. But when the beans are extracted and dried, the smell is very bad. I have seen them in Malaysia. My grand dad used to grow them.
It is amazing how something so vile smelling like puke can taste so good when it is processed.
This tree grows in the winter garden at the Auckland domain.

Hey Ann: We're MYM neighbors! Never heard that the unprocessed chocolate smelled so bad! Interesting. Great to show the food at its origin!
Oh how I miss eating that fruit we called it in the Phils Cacao you can process it on chocolate its true the front yard of my grandparents house has a few fruit trees of cacao us the fgrandchildren like climbing sometimes you can pick the fruit on lower part of the tree and very delicious juicy and sweet flavor. Thanks for posting it.

Wow, I have never seen a yellow one. My father planted two cocoa trees at our backyard but they are purple when they get ripen.

I can find a few cocoa plants nearby my house.
It is better to see chocolate bars instead of the pods on the tree.
Oh, these pods look kind of large! Strange that raw chocolate will smell so bad! But think about sauerkraut and cabbage, actually I'm thinking of quite a few foods that smell so bad, but taste good.

My grandfather used to plant this too Ann. And when it's harvest time we are there to help him...oh well make a mess actually because we like to chew the seeds because it's sweet. ^_^ The best part is when it is grind it smells heavenly! ^_^

Hi Ann, I didn't know what cocoa pods even looked like... AND---I had no idea that it smelled so bad.... That's hard to believe --as delicious as chocolate it....

a friend grew some of these in Hawaii and sent me a pod. I ground the beans after all the work to get to them. They were very bitter, but i enjoyed the experience. Chocolate is bitter with out the sugar.
You can find a few trees in Singapore zoo and the Jacob Ballas Children Garden - an extention of the Botanic Gardens.
