ABC wedneday : Letter R
http://abcwednesdayround3.blogspot.com/
The rotary clothes dryer.
It has four sets of lines and is similar to an umbrella. A more sophisticated one has a winding mechanism which can make the lines higher or lower depending if you have items like sheets. When the wind blows, your laundry goes round and round like a merry-go-round.
My sparrows enjoy his rides very much, they perch on it and if I got laundry drying, The poop on them.
In a recent high profile child abuse and murder case, the poor kid was hung up on the wire, and spun round and round. Wiremu Curtis, 19, and his brother Michael, 22, face life sentences for the murder of Nia Glassie.
This dryer is a common sight in Australia and New Zealand. In the old days, it was the law to build hopuses on quater acre sections. There were plenty of room for this drier. These days, many houses are sub divided.
When the people left England for New Zealand, they remembered the Great fire of London. They didn't want a repeat. Hence the law for quarter acre.

What an interesting post for the R day, Ann! My family had one of those years ago, but I haven't seen one in ages! Hope your week is going well! Enjoy!

I love the sparrows. I'm sorry they poop on your laundry, but they do look so cute sitting there.
Interesting bit of history about houses having to be built on quarter acres because people were afraid of fire.
Rotary dryer -- a good idea for R day, Ann!

My late wife's mother had one of these dryers in her back yard. Nowadays many communities don't allow you to hang clothes outside.
We still have the Hills Hoist as they are called in Australia but these days they are not fixed in the ground you can remove them so they are not the way when you have a party or BBq. Houses were built on quarter acres because back then there was plenty of space in Australia but we are running out of space. I've never heard of the fire bit.
Wonderful post. I rarely get to see sparrows here in recent times.
I don't think we can find this here in Singapore, I know there's the mobile version of this and smaller.
I've never used one of those, but I have seen them.
When I was a kid Monday was laundry day. Everyone used this kind of drying line. And no one was allowed to burn trash on Monday because the ash would dirty the laundry being hung. Now no one is allowed to burn trash at all and everyone uses a machine dryer.
I remember using that type of clothes line when I was young. the laundry smelled so sweet being dried outside.
Interesting info about the quarter acre.
how wonderfully ecological!

I used to see the rotary clothes dryer in Brazil, it's difficult to know if people here in Luxembourg also have it.I think it's a great way to dry clothes!
Hugs and REGARDS,
Léia
I think rotary clothes driers are fabulous. There are few aromas more wonderful than bed sheets right off the clothesline! (Without poop, pf course!)
What a neat clothesline, Ann.... I love the idea of one which blows in the breeze. There's nothing better than smelling sheets after they have dried outside...
We have an inside clothes dryer --and clothes lines are not allowed in our community... SO--I miss those days of getting to hang my clothes outside.
Hugs,
Betsy
We need one of those rotary dryers. We do air our laundry outside and since we live in a bird sanctuary we regulatory get bird poop on our laundry from the dozens of sparrows. C'est la vie. I do love the smell of line-dried laundry. Not at all like an electric dryer.
These days, I seldom hang my laundry outside, except on Saturday if I am home.
1: The Auckland weather changes so much that there is a joke, there are 4 seasons in one day, and 4 seasons in one block.
2: It may be fine when I go to work, but it could rain two hours later.
3: The blogging bug has infected me, once I get home from work, I am blogging, and am not bothered with hanging the laundry,
So the eco warrior has succumbed to her laziness and just rely on her drier in her laundry.
I remember using one of those and having to rewash much of the laundry because of birds. :) So far there have been none in my dryer! Good post!
Great idea for the letter R. That is terrible about the child.
Oh my goodness, I had forgotten I had one of those clothes lines when my oldest (now 48) was in diapers.
I heard a commotion, and went outside to see our dog jumping up grabbing a diaper in his teeth, and going for a ride....It was hilarious, but bad on the diapers. Wish I was a camera buff back in those years ~ a picture would have been great!
wow,
apt r take...
love sparrows.
