Thursday Theme Song: Puff the magic dragon

hootin--anni has a new meme.
IT'S ALL ABOUT MY NEW MEME THAT I HOPE SOME WILL FEEL LIKE JOINING IN ON THE CHALLENGE AND THE FUN [at least I hope the weekly challenge will be fun!]. It's loosely based on song lyrics [recorded songs since the beginning of time to today] and associating them with photos of yours...as I've done in the past...If you click on the link above, it'll take you to the Meme's Homepage for rules and buttons. There will be a Mr. Linky Widget for each individual week also. Do consider joining me sometime. Hope to see it flourish in time.

When I first heard this song, my three year old had gone to watch a mini musical and came home singing "Puff the magic dragon." and the tune was very catchy. Then some parents were complaining why we were teaching the child sing songs that glorified drugs.

Its about a little kid, and everyday the kid goes to the beach to play with the dragon. As the kid gets older the dragon doesn't come play anymore because the dragon was his imagination, The song is about growing up and how life change and get sadder as you get older!

It was adapted from a poem. Peter, Paul and Mary made it a point to include at least one song on each album that was purely for children and they tended to choose songs with helped children understand growing up and how life changes.

In Coyle's Park in Pt Chevelier, Puff lies basking in the sun waiting for children to play.

Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee

Little Jackie Paper loved that rascal Puff,
and brought him strings and sealing wax and other fancy stuff. Oh

Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee
Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee

Together they would travel on a boat with billowed sail
Jackie kept a lookout perched on Puff's gigantic tail,
Noble kings and princes would bow whene'er they came,
Pirate ships would lower their flags when Puff roared out his name. Oh

Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee
Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee

A dragon lives forever but not so little boys
Painted wings and giant rings make way for other toys.
One grey night it happened, Jackie Paper came no more
And Puff that mighty dragon, he ceased his fearless roar.

His head was bent in sorrow, green scales fell like rain,
Puff no longer went to play along the cherry lane.
Without his life-long friend, Puff could not be brave,
So Puff that mighty dragon sadly slipped into his cave. Oh

Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee
Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee

This is the dragon that I would love to play with, and love this story when I read it to my children!

Both versions of Puff the Magic Dragon are fantastic i remember them well. Mary Travers the Mary of Peter, Paul and Mary passed away last year a sad loss indeed. I don't know if you know about the childrens t.v. show H.R. Puffinstuff that was a very funny show with a full size puppet dragon.

I remember Puff the Magic Dragon very well, and you're right -- the tune is definitely catchy. The dragon waiting for children to come play is definitely neat.

Delightful choice of photos for the song! Puf (Peter, Paul and Mary version) is one of my favorites and was popular when my kids were small. Thanks for comment on Beth. It certainly was good to see her! We don't get to see our family as much as the East coast ones.

I love Puff, he was one of my favorite dragons in song. I used to teach this song to kids at summer camp.

The photos are great Ann, kids must love to play on the dragon.
