Skywatch Friday: News Helicopter

http://skyley.blogspot.com/
I have always wondered how they shoot the videos of sportiing events. Today, I found out. I was at a big event, and I saw a small model helicopter hovering round and round. I asked the security guard if that was for the camera. She said yes.

I got to learn something new today.

Addition: It was a remote controlled helicopter. It was quite small about two feet long.

I learned something new today too :-)
My latest blog post contains a few short paragraphs about what I learned today.

During our Thanksgiving holiday I saw three helicopters that were covering a story about a crash on a highway. The helicopters were so close we could see the camera setup!

Ever since my husbands helicopter ride during his heart attack, I wonder if some other worried family is praying as they make the long drive to the hospital.
I'm glad your heli was taping an exciting event.

That's a really good shot! I've been trying to shoot helicopters for awhile now, it's hard because they can move faster than I can focus the camera. Only thing worse is birds in flight.

Great sky shot. You managed to capture a helicopter in motion. I enjoyed your story as well.

Most all of the cities around here have News Helicopters... Several years ago, when I was living in Texas, a News Helicopter crashed and several people died. It was so sad --and that TV Station ran some great memorials for those who died.

You got a great picture of yours, Ann.
Hugs,
Betsy

I went for a ride in a helicopter a few years ago and it was fantastic you should give it a try.

i didn't know this either. thanks for sharing.

Yes that is what they do now. Here in Michigan if I see helicopter hovering around either it's a news helicopter reporting traffic news or a cop helicopter looking something illegal ^_^

Cool shot! I like the way the shutter stopped the rotor in mid-circle!

I agree, what a cool shot, Ann. It is so neat you were able to capture him so well. I have never been up in one and hope never to experience the ride. Take care and Happy New Year. Genie

What a lovely capture. Interesting shot of the helicopter you have there. Sometimes, we barely even notice they were there, when they are so high above us and we are busy observing what's happening on the ground.

A bird's eye view :-) These newscaster almost always managed to captured stunning photos from the top. It look like a sea of people from the top.

Wonder what it's like to be in the helicopter. Hope to someday experience a ride in these.

I've seen full-sized, manned helicopters covering events, but never a remote-controlled one. You got a good picture.

I missed the word "model" in front of helicopter the first time I read this blog post. This is a first for me; didn't know sports was covered with remote-controlled helicopters. Thank you for pointing out to me one my blog post that the helicopter was remotely controlled.

Nice shot,it looks as though the helicopter is transparent.
