Letter N for New Zealand, and a New Zealand song. The singing and dancing is very beautiful. The song is performed by two different groups, and you will see that New Zealand people are very adaptable and they have allowed tradition to be incorporated with modern dance.
Throughout my three sites, I have posted photos of New Zealand.

ABC Wednesday is hosted by Mrs. Denise Nesbitt
hootin--anni has a new meme.
IT'S ALL ABOUT MY NEW MEME THAT I HOPE SOME WILL FEEL LIKE JOINING IN ON THE CHALLENGE AND THE FUN [at least I hope the weekly challenge will be fun!]. It's loosely based on song lyrics [recorded songs since the beginning of time to today] and associating them with photos of yours...as I've done in the past...If you click on the link above, it'll take you to the Meme's Homepage for rules and buttons. There will be a Mr. Linky Widget for each individual week also. Do consider joining me sometime. Hope to see it flourish in time.

I am teaching my students the Marae, the meeting place of the Maori people. Earlier this year, I spent an evening there, and later I went with my sister. I learnt quite a bit of protocol to teach my students.
This is the first entrance, where visitors wait until they are invited to enter the grounds. There is a Powhiri. The visitors sing a karanga, telling the hosts they come in peace. The women will enter first, to show indeed they come in peace.
The twirling poi is often used as a symbol of a young woman's affections. They are volatile, but with some energetic training, they protect her from danger. E rere ra e taku poi porotiti
Tītahataha ra, whakararuraru e
Porotakataka rā, poro hurihuri mai
Rite tonu ki te tiwaiwaka e
Ka parepare ra, pīoioi a
Whakahekeheke, e kia korikori e
Piki whakarunga ra, ma muinga mai a
Taku poi porotiti, taku poi e!
Poi E, whakatata mai
Poi E, kaua he rerekē
Poi E, kia piri mai ki au
Poi E, e awhi mai ra
Poi E, tāpekatia mai.
Poi E, ō tāua aroha -
- Poi E - paiheretia ra.
POI... TAKU POI, E!
Swing out rhythmically, my feelings
lean out beside me, so deceptively.
Swing round and down, spin towards me
just like a fantail.
Swing to the side: swing to and fro
zoom down, wriggle,
climb up above, swarm around me
my whirling emotions, my poi, Yeah!
Oh my feelings, draw near,
Oh my poi, don't go astray
Oh my affections, stick to me
Oh my instincts, take care of me
Oh my emotions, be entwined around me.
Oh poi, our love...
Oh poi ...binds.
Poi.... my poi, yeah!

These dances are very interesting! In the second video, I think the dog stole someone's poi and ran away with it! I like the way they have the modern mixed with the old. It is for sure a skill. I am so clumsy, I am sure that I would hit myself in the head with it!
Interesting N post - glad to know this information...
Wonderful song and dance performances.
I found NZ very interesting; I read two US Thanks for this angle.

NA is one of the countries that I really want to visit - only it is too far away for an old man like me :-)
Nice place New-Zealand and a different time zone for me. Interesting post :)
The videos are very interesting, and it looks like everyone takes part in the dance, singing and fun of the dance.
Very interesting post about New Zealand. Thanks for visiting mine and in answer to your question, a friend built the nesting boxes under my roof eaves and installed them for me.
A very interesting and informative post for the N Day, Ann. I enjoyed the music and dance! Thanks for sharing it with us! Hope your week is going well!

this is very neat and very interesting!
Wow, Ann, and wow again!!
I really enjoyed the first video, but I loved the second one. Not just for the dog, but for the way everyone joined in and had such a good time, with old dances and new; young people and older people. Such a compelling beat, and I love the lyrics.
Wonderful for "N" and wonderful for Thursday Theme Song. I sure hope Thursday Theme Song becomes a worldwide successful meme. We can learn so much.

Oh I loved this! Thanks for letting us hear such a compelling song and rythmn.
I have friends in an Hawaiian Club that do similar things. Its so much fun to watch. I like the mixture of traditional and modern too.
That looks very colorful and fun, something I'd love to see in person.
Outstanding job for the song choice this week!!! Ann, I always enjoy coming here 'cause I learn so much of the culture and your country's favorite songs. Well done.
How wonderful and what a cool song and dance that is. I love how you always let us learn something from the culture. It's fantastic. Very well done my friend. Have a great Thursday :)
Thank you for sharing some of New Zealand's culture!
Thanks for sharing those videos, NZ have such an interesting culture.
This is a wonderful catchy song, hadn't seen the words before. I like the lady caller in the song.
Mainly I prefer the age old Maori action songs.
