ABC: Letter B for Jean Batten.

Jean Batten was a record setting female explorer and pioneer aviator who left her mark in aviation history.

A memorial and the Auckland International airport dedicated to Jean Batten.

That's me, trying to walk/fly in Jean's foot steps in a bi-plane , a tiger moth.

Jean Batten - Pioneer Pilot, New Zealand's number one daughter.

Adventurous, glamorous and daring, pilot Jean Batten's record-breaking flights between 1933 and 1937 made her possibly the most famous New Zealander of the decade. In October 1937, aged 28, Batten made her final long distance flight, from Australia to England in 5 days 18 hours. The flight set a solo record for pilots of either sex.

Batten's highly publicised long distance flights earned her international celebrity

How brave you are, Ann, to go up in a Tiger Moth. Thank you for your story of your name. So you have a name day?
Thanks! Have a great week! Wil from ABC Wednesday team.

I'm very impressed that you went up in the Tiger Moth.
A very nice tribute to Jean Batten. I wasn't familiar with her either.
To answer your question about the bicycle.
It was a vintage bike in a heritage museum. The bike had huge wheels and very narrow rims. I believe it was from the early 1900's.
I never took a picture of the entire thing.

Thanks for a very interesting and informative post. I must admit that I had not heard of Jean Batten before. I'm glad New Zealand has honored her so well.

I have never heard of this lady. Did you go up in this plane? Have you flown much, in small planes? You are so much braver than me!!!

Yes, I 'flew" the Tiger moth"
No, I didn't fly, I mean I was in the plane, but I wasn't allowed to touch the controls.
So I was just a passenger.
Still it was a lovely experience, a tick off my bucket list.

I admire you, embarking an old Tiger Moth. I'd never would have had the guts doing so, even as a passenger.P.S. My daughter would have given anything in the world to be in New Zealand now with Martin Freeman and the lot. I guess she's geeky enough even to fly a Tiger Moth to get there.

How very exciting Ann....Love your story and your pictures. I would do that in a flash!

My dad got his pilot license when I was 8 years old, and I loved going up in small planes with him, and have loved to fly ever since. Best trip ever was from Paris California to Portland Maine in a 4 passenger Sesna ~ trip of a lifetime.
