I was in a small town in West Malaysia when I saw these baskets in a florist shop. Most of these baskets are made from a vine called rattan.
To school kids growing up in Malaysia and Singapore, the word rattan can send a shiver up one's spine. Teachers used to have a thin rattan with them to beat the students. People think that the smaller the cane, the more painful it can be. But I was told that a big rattan used by the prison officers can break skin and flesh.

I like rattan used for making baskets and furniture, but for assault it's a total no-no (shiver).

OK a rattan sounds scary.. In my childhood it used to be a ruler for all the punishments...

My house is full of baskets, both for utilitarian and decorative uses. Caning children is a crime against humanity as far as I'm concerned.

I don't think I would want to be hit by rattan even if it was thin. But the baskets are beautiful.

There are so many uses for baskets. These are a very pretty group. Yes, squirrel dig holes and bury nuts for later eating. My yard is full of holes. What is strange, they can go back to the same spot for the nut they buried. They are smart.
Not only it break the skin, it also leave marks on the broken skin!
