The buzz word in NewZealand today is cold, cold and more cold. It is only May, or late autumn in New Zealand. But we are feeling the first of our winter cold. There is snow fall in certain areas.The freezing air is blowing from Antartica and is creating havoc in certain places, making the roads slippery from the black ice. Some lucky children get a day off and enjoy their snow fights and snow balls.To those of you in Canada or Alaska or Minnesota, it is nothing. I can't imagine how I had survived the Canadian cold when it was a record minus 28 degrees. But then I was a twenty year old kid.
Whakapapa ski fields in Mt Ruapehu is a great place to be if you are into winter sports. My kids want to go again this year. The snow was beautiful, but they still had snow machines. This was last August's photo. (Maori pronounciation of WH is F)
I wrote a chapter of my book where they went skiing.

I remember some pretty cold temperatures while in Canada. Are any parts of New Zealand frost free? I'm in Bermuda and we never get frost.
We had a dusting of snow in Taranaki on Wednesday night--just enough to have a short snowball fight at 9pm!
That is proof that I was lured here under false pretenses since I was assured it only snows here once every 12 years or so, and the last one was only 5 years back!
The last time I visited Germany I was expecting a huge pile of snow to my dismay. The only snow I saw up there was when we returned home via Switzerland. There, there I saw REAL Big DEAL of snow almost drowning a mountain cottage.
In Orange not much. If it would forecast snow, we had to rise up early in the morning to beat the sunrise. Else, the strong sun will melt the solid crystal from the ground.

oh i wish i could ski there! What a good time eh? Here isnt bad but we have had some pretty bad winters in terms of quality skiing.
Where I live on the east coast the skiing is more like downhill skating because we dont have a lot of powder, only hardpack. :( Enjoy the winter!!
