Mt Taranaki

This is Mt Taranaki or Mt Egmont. This photo is taken about one hundred kilometers away at the  Tongariro track. It is an active but quiescent stratovolcano in the Taranaki region on the west coast of New Zealand's North Island.

This volcano is at the back yard of fellow blogger bettyl. Lucky her, she can look out of her kitchen window and see the snow capped mountain. Perhaps, one day, she will organise a track for us. We might even be in the cast of The last Samurai 2. Because of its resemblance to Mount Fuji, Taranaki provided the backdrop for the movie The Last Samurai.

Getting there

Mount Taranaki Summit Track

The Mount Taranaki Summit Track is located in the Egmont National Park, in the Wanganui region.
The track access point is at the North Egmont Visitor Centre off SH 4 at Egmont Village.

Description

Experience is required when icy/snowy. You need to plan 4 - 7 hours climbing time to reach the summit and 3 - 4 hours for your return descent.

This track should only to be attempted in good weather and with the proper equipment.

Weather conditions can change very rapidly in the mountains. Be sure to have appropriate (warm) clothing with you and enough food and water for a long one-day tramp.
