Photo hunt: Trees: The rampage in the northeastern state of Connecticut

One afternoon, we had a bad tropical storm.
Lightning striked,
Thunder clapped,
Rain bucketed ,
Trees up rooted.
Flower pots tumbled,
Flash floods filled the basement,
I lied in bed with my duvet over my head.

The first funeral I went in New Zealand,
was to celebrate a man
who gave all his life,
to helping the less fortunate.
The eulogy talked of Ken Thornton,
A giant Kauri tree had fallen.
Ken had live a full life.
It was fitting to rejoice as he went.

This morning, we had a senseless human storm.
a different kind of lightning struck.
Another kind of thunder clapped.
What was in this twenty year old's head.
Saplings fell.
A few grown tree uprooted.

I feel for these fallen saplings.
I like the authorities to find out,
Why a young man,
can deteriorate to such an extent.
I like the authorities to find out,
Why 10,728 Americans have succumbed to hand guns
when there are only 8 in UK.

I didn't cover my head.
I used my hands,
And wrote about the senselessness.
Why am I doing this?
My friend Genie put the words right in my mouth.
Only a mom who has lost a child,
can truly comprehend the grief these parents feel.

It cannot be an accident that Trees have been chosen as this week's meme. Gattina had chose it long ago. But it has to be Trees and bells. My poems are not perfect, but they are written from my heart. I am not in USA. If any one would want to form a gallery for the parents, I am happy for you to include mine.

Weekend reflection: Sarawak and Periwinkle

My trip in July to Sarawak, my place of birth brought me to my roots. It was the periwinkle aka Catharanthus roseus flower that brought me a mixed emotion. My grand dad grew a lot of them and we were told never ever pick them. To put his point across, Grand dad picked one flower and let it bleed with white milky sap. He said it was poisonous.

It was when I was adult living in Singapore when I was excited about growing them. It reminded me of my time in grand dad's garden. As the secretary of the Gardening Club I didn't want to be responsible for growing a plant that could hurt children of the neighbourhood. A professor of Science gave me some literature to read. Periwinkle can be dangerous if consumed orally. It can be extremely toxic. So I put up signs at my plants to educate the grown ups not to let children pick my flowers.

On the other hand, I read in Canada, they were using this flower to treat cancer patients. It's like the Chinese saying, using poison to kill another poison. Still, I am cautious and would not suggest anyone to pick the lovely flowers.

Save the world/photohunt: Zesty- Christine Maslowski

8th ~ Zesty
Synonyms: Dynamic, effervescent, energetic, enthusiastic

This week's Zesty sent me to google the meaning of this word. I had known ZEST as in lemon Zest and I didn't want to use this definition. My English teacher Dr Jannis would be very pleased with me. This morning, I met this wonderful zesty woman.

Christine Maslowski had invited the water engineer to give his expert advice on some shoreline she and her friends were wanting to save. I tagged along to take photos for my blogs and I am glad I went.

The zesty award of my Photohunt and my save the world goes to Christine who is not only fighting to save the shoreline of Whitford. For the last 10 years she has been fighting to save New Zealand Natives birds by setting traps against rodents like rats and stoats. And protecting the area by gently reminding people not to take their dogs in the protected area. I would have shouting," Hey you, can't you read??" But she didn't.

May be I should nominate her to the Good Sorts on TV1. Unfortunately the people I nominate don't get selected.
