A healthy functional well-formed udder is vital to piglet survival not only to provide colostrum and milk but also to give all the piglets easy teat access.
Teat and udder conformation
There are two fundamental factors that decide whether a sow can rear 12 or more pigs; first whether all piglets are able to get access to teats and second whether they can suck milk freely from them.
Now I have learnt a new word - thanks Ann!

This is a breed of pig I am not familiar with...important information.
ReplyDeletea u-word I would not have thought of (but then I don't have any pictures to go with it either!)
ReplyDeleteUdder, and I check with Google Search, it means only for quadruped mammals.
ReplyDeleteudderly adorable...
ReplyDeleteLove the shaggy, hairy pig and pigletts. Perfect word choice for the letter U.
ReplyDeleteOh these shaggy colorful piglets are adorable...
ReplyDeleteAfter my cancer surgery and 6 weeks radiation, my doctor recommended "Udderly Smooth" cream for my breast. It's actually made for treating udders and teats of cows from cracking.
Very interesting post...
The "udder cream" is, as Wanda mentioned, very good. Love the photos, too bad you didn't have any udder ones to show us. :o)
