Weekend Reflection : Origamy Heavenly crane

Today is the 15th day of the Lunar new Year. I am asked to do a presentation ofl the Story of the Lantern Festival which is a big festival here in Auckland. I had no idea as we didn't celebrate this in Borneo.

Google came to help.

This is my presentation.

Long time ago, King and Princess of the heavens had a crane,

One day the crane fell off the skies and landed on the earth.
Some stupid, greedy and silly people slaughtered the crane.
The King was so angry, he promised fire and brimstone.

The princess came down and Honest apologized.

She had pity on them,
She told them to have lanterns, bon fires, crackers when the moon was full.
On that day, the people made a loud racket.
The princess said," Dad, the earth is on fire. and there is war.
The king saw and heard that, and stopped sending the fire.
This is why people celebrate the lantern festival.

The people also eat little round dumplings in round bowls.
It signifies peace and unity.

ABC Wednesday: F for family

                                        The Chan Family

From China to Borneo to Beyond. I just finished my second book, and at the printers. It's all about families.

This is a hundred years old journal of two families, the Chans and the Kongs.

It traces the first movement in 1907 from GuangZhou China to the jungles of Borneo. It is a six generational record with the second wave of movement to England, Canada, Japan, Singapore, Australia, USA and New Zealand.

The journal begins from the author’s great Grandfather Chan Kwong Kouk and centres on the life of the author’s father John Chan Hiu Fei until his demise in 2006.

The Opium war, virgin tropical jungle, Japanese World War, colonial days, a revolution, a fight with the communists; These were harshness and the difficulties the families had to go through.

ABC Wed: letter F for fish pond.

Fish ponds and Ferries were things of my heritage. Grandpa reared fish and we helped during harvesting time. For save the world meme, rearing fish means you can have fish throughout the year and no be dependent on the seasons.

My friend  John Bennet from Bintangnor sent me these ferry photos. It brings me fond memories of another ferry that used to ply further up the river at My maternal grand parents' at Durin. That ferry had been replaced by a bridge.

Mellow Yellow/ Red Chinese New Year

This friend's Chinese outfit is very yellow.
My adult student Ashley made these special tidbit, DAN SAN, loosely translated as egg crisp. My mother used too make this when I was little. Thank you Ashley for memories.
Ashley also brought some shop bought deep fried peanut puff. Another  New Year Tidbit that my aunts and Mum made.

This restaurant has very nice lanterns.
Lunar/Chinese New year lasts for 15 days, and I have been teaching my students and giving presentation on why we celebrate the New Year. I am asked to give another for the 15th, the Lantern Festival. It was good to be asked because U didn't know myself.

Thursday Challenged: Round

New Year 2010, I took the train from Surfers Paradise to Brisbane. We had fun especially in the Science centre.

Look at the gem Brisbane city gave to me. In the grounds of the Arts, Museum , Science centre, was a mother duck protecting 4 ducklings. She did not even move when spectators got very near to them. She had her wings spreaded round the ducklings.

Near by is the Brisbane Eye. I did not go on it because it was very hot and I don't like going round and round and round. Click on this , for a close up photo taken by the water engineer when he came on a work assignment trip.

Once the Singapore Wheel broke down for many hours, and people had no where to pee and it was terrible in the humid hot weather. This reinforced me not to go on a wheel. http://annkschin.blogspot.com/2008/12/singapore-flyer.html

ABC Letter E: Elevator

Thanks to my friend Sarawakiana for posting a similar theme. When I went to Singapore  last July, I saw this and was glad I had material to post for my Save the world.

When I lived in Singapore for 16 years, I lived in a low rise apartment. We chose a low rise instead of a high rise, because I didn't want to depend on ELECTRICITY and the ELEVATOR.  You can't see the ELEVATOR from the outside, but there are two.

Just as I was coming out of the ELEVATOR at 100 Nanyang Meadows, on 2 occasions, I saw two gentlemen holding books. I observed them. This gentleman told me it was their own kind of library. Anyone can leave books and take them for reading. There is no policing. I was very impressed.

Having lived in such a "gentleman" professor environment, I can only conjecture that that there has to be mutual trust. What a great lesson they were showing their children.

I recount and blogged an occasion where my books walked when I put a box outside to raise funds for my Charity for the Deaf in Kenya. There were some very "Ungentleman" behavior.

So where is the ELEVATOR? I was in it taking the photo, trying to be discrete. May be he will read this post.  Good job the residences of Nanyang Meadows Block 100.

Photohunt: Promise

Your promise of a gourmet lunch better be true. I am risking my life in this boat without a life boat.

We were in the Mulu caves and stayed in the upmarket resort. For lunch however, we had to crosse the river  in this boat.

We went across Melinau River by long boat to the cafe for our lunch. I was weary of not wearing a life jacket. The sign at the jetty said all passengers must wear jackets. Luckily the trip was a short one. People including children were bathing, swimming and fishing off the other jetties. It couldn't be so dangerous if they were doing it.

Mellow Yellow: going round and round to no where.

A child's merry go round in a shopping mall.

Round and round .
goes the play equipment,
Some kids feel dizzy,
I want to get off,
Sorry you can't.
you need to wait til the money is finished,

Round and round.
we adults sometimes do,
going no where,
We can't get off,
we already invested in it.
Isn't this how some of us live,
round and round going now where?

Stay mellow with yellow!

weekend reflection/scenic sunday: Auckland city.

In Auckland city, some old buildings have been torn down and new sky rise buildings replace them.

An event you liked best in 2012,...

"THE BEST OF 2012" (A photo/event you liked best in 2012,...) on 14 October 2012, Sands, bereaved parents and grandparents, and siblings and friends released balloons to our beloved departed angels.

This gentleman brought a stalk of rose to tie it to his ballon. The rose fell off, and he was desperately trying to tie it. I gave him a safety pin, and it did the job. Him, a bereaved grandpa, and me a bereaved mum, his emotions were very raw. I can only conjecture that their loss was very recent.

sorry this is done in caps, I don't know why.
